Sierra Club

SierraCub_CC Jane

Recently, conservation activist Richard Whiteford noticed that over 1800 Sierra Club members live in Chester County, so he decided to pull us together. Our first organizational meeting was held last night at the Iron Hill Brewery. Many state board members were there to introduce themselves and enlighten us on their areas of expertise. Robin Mann spoke passionately about my passion - water quality.

We bumped into our friend Jane Fava, who heads up "Red Streams Blue" for the Brandywine Valley Association, where I used to teach. John Poth of West Goshen was there to express concern over the new YMCA which is to be built on a tract of virgin forest and wetlands. He asked how cutting down 400 trees and paving over wetlands could be allowed to happen. We introduced him to Jane, who knows a lot about wetlands. She might be able to help him. That's the great thing about pulling people togther---not only do we network, but sometimes we also find answers to our questions.

Growing Greener II

Yesterday, the sun was shining and the money was flowing from the state's Growing Greener II program to help preserve open space in Chester County. Introduced by Michael DiBerardinis, Secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the Governor read a list of projects that will receive funding.

Among them was our own East Bradford! The township will receive $179,000 toward the acquisition of a 23-acre property "near the confluence of the East and West branches of the Brandywine Creek for natural area protection and passive recreation including a kayak launch, picnic area and walking trails."

Dr. John Hagens, East Bradford Township Supervisor and Michael Lynch, Township Manager, were on hand to witness the announcement. We also spoke with Molly Morrison and Jack Stefferud of Natural Lands Trust; Lydia Willits Bartholomew of the National Bank of Malvern who is a neighbor of NLT's Stroud Preserve; Nancy Mohr of Chester County 2020; Andy Dinniman, County Commissioner and candidate for the PA Senate;Bill Gladden; Dick Whiteford; and friends Rick Davis (Happy Birthday!), Elizabeth Thomas (Happy Birthday!), Meryle and Fred Rothman, Linda Maxwell and her sister Lisa Daley, Bob Bruckman, and Mary Whittam with her dog Charlie.
