Sierra Club
Recently, conservation activist Richard Whiteford noticed that over 1800 Sierra Club members live in Chester County, so he decided to pull us together. Our first organizational meeting was held last night at the Iron Hill Brewery. Many state board members were there to introduce themselves and enlighten us on their areas of expertise. Robin Mann spoke passionately about my passion - water quality.
We bumped into our friend Jane Fava, who heads up "Red Streams Blue" for the Brandywine Valley Association, where I used to teach. John Poth of West Goshen was there to express concern over the new YMCA which is to be built on a tract of virgin forest and wetlands. He asked how cutting down 400 trees and paving over wetlands could be allowed to happen. We introduced him to Jane, who knows a lot about wetlands. She might be able to help him. That's the great thing about pulling people togther---not only do we network, but sometimes we also find answers to our questions.

This is the first time I heard that the Y was being built on wetlands. That is a definite no-no, I thought. There must be hanky-panky going on somewhere.

Thanks for focusing attention on this problem of the YMCA building on wetlands. Let's hope conservation counts and a compromise can be reached.

Wow, I didn't know that either! I'd love to learn more about this.
